New Zealand is an island nation with a society based on the European/Western model with a distinct South Pacific variety. The population is made up of a conglomerate of different peoples and cultures with an emphasis of tolerance and easygoing informality.
English is the official language. Weather Conditions: New Zealand has a temperate climate with the Summertime being between October and March. Summer temperatures range between 23 degrees C and 30 degrees C with a comfortable average in the mid 20's. Variable weather is a feature of New Zealand's climate especially during the season changes in the alpine/back country areas and you are advised to be prepared for wet/cold weather if you are walking/hunting those areas. Tax: A GST (Goods and Services Tax) of 12.5% is charged on goods and services supplied within New Zealand. This charge is normally included in a quoted price. However, when a supplier ships a major purchase directly to a visitor's overseas address GST will not be charged. Tipping and service charges: Tipping is not part of Kiwi Culture, so New Zealander's do not expect tips for service - even in restaurants and bars, and Hotels and Restaurants do not add any service charges to their bills. How much does it cost? As a guide to costs in New Zealand, some indicator goods are listed with approximate prices
Power: New Zealand's power supply is rated at 240 volts, therefore, if you are bringing electrical equipment to New Zealand, you will need to use an electrical adapter if your equipment is not configured to this system. These adapters are readily available at most hardware stores. Traffic: New Zealand roads are somewhat narrower than some other countries, therefore care should be taken if you're driving through New Zealand, and remember WE DRIVE ON THE LEFT SIDE OF THE ROAD. |
